iPad 4 months (almost 5) months in + Crystal Film iPad Review

August 27, 2010

Well everyone, sorry it has taken so long to write  a blog post. I have been extremely busy in my personal life as well as my professional life, and it has just been a nightmare.

Anyhow, you don’t want to hear about that I’m sure. Let’s talk about the iPad. It’s still truly remarkable. Best machine I have ever owned. I just love how light and easy it is to transport around, and how fast the Internet is on it (if you have a good connection of course). I do not regret buying the WiFi only version at all. I do have one complaint. Somehow, I got a scratch on the screen, visible when the machine is on. That, my friends, is a travesty. So immediately I went out and bought the Crystal Film for iPad.

It’s awesome. It went on with no dust, and no bubbles. Now, at least, I’ll have piece of mind for the rest of my iPad screen. I have seen others with screen protectors and their application of it looks terrible. I am very happy that I went with the Crystal Film instead of any other type of screen protector. It’s like not having one on my iPad as well.

Well I couldn’t resist. I got a 64GB WiFi iPad

April 3, 2010

Well I decided that i couldn’t wait for the 3G iPad. I needed to have his asap. I must say it is amazing. So far, it has utterly blown me away at how awesome it is. I haven’t stopped using it since I got it at 9am thus morning. I gotta say that I can definitely get used to using the onscreen keyboard however I do see the need for a real keyboard If you are writing a ridiculous article as typing fast on glass is not ideal.

I bought the Apple Case and the dock. What a big snafu that was. The iPad with the case on does not fit in the dock.

So far I bought Weather HD $0.99 cents, Comic Zeal 4 $7.99, and MLB for $14.99. The only one I regret is Weather HD. Other than that, the comics look amazing and MLB is awesome.

I love this thing. The screen is so vivid and bright. Browsing the Internet on it is ridiculous. Typing is not so ideal but not terrible. USA Today is awesome. So many great apps and this is just the beginning.

This blog post published and wrote on iPad.🙂

Why I will be getting a 3G iPad.

February 27, 2010

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, but I figured I mind as well get back to writing on the blog. I’ve been jonesing for an iPad ever since the day after it’s release and I’ll give you the low down on why I will be getting an iPad.

As a tech aficionado my original response to the iPad was epic fail. I thought this exactly: “What is this? It’s just a big iPod Touch. What? It doesn’t have a camera? It doesn’t have Adobe Flash? It doesn’t have multitasking? It doesn’t run full OS X?”. Those are all the same questions that have been plaguing the Internets since the iPad was announced. However, after sleeping on it, and being an iPhone developer, I then realized my bourde.

As a developer, I now realize the incredible potential of the iPad. At first, I didn’t get it either, but hear me out. Mac OS X was written back in the late 1990s, early 2000’s. Mac OS X 10.0 was released on March 24th, 2001, a long time before the iPhone was realized. It’s primary input was a keyboard and mouse. Most of it’s focus is as a keyboard and mouse OS and not as a touch screen OS. Your (not just you) fingers are big. Imagine trying to hit the Red X with you finger. It would be tough on a 10″ screen. A lot of applications have been written for OSX that rely on the keyboard and mouse. There is no incentive for people to develop OSX based touch screen apps with no store for them. Being a developer on the Internet is a lot harder then being a developer on the iTunes App Store.

So then, the obvious choice is the iPhone OS. Why? Well, because developers like me will be able to write programs and get them into a common place to sell apps. Also, pure and simply, innovation. All iPhone OS were developed with touch controls and acceloremeter controls in mind, the same input / output controls as the iPad. So now, what can developers do? Make bigger, better iPhone programs.

I know what you are saying. “What does this mean? Doesn’t it mean it’s just a bigger iPod Touch?” No. I also said the word better. With this 1024×768 display as opposed to a 480×320 display, developers will be able to make better programs. Additional programs that will only work on the iPad due to the size nature of them. For instance, imagine a cook book with the ingredients on the left side and the directions on the bottom right and a video playing on the top right. That would be incredible.

That would be an amazing cookbook.

The possibilities are endless as a developer. It really is an amazing time. Think about AIM with a buddy list on the left, your conversation in the top right and a web browser in the bottom right. Essentially that is multitasking. Hopefully they’ll do more for us, but I have a feeling that most multitasking is web browsing plus something, so developers can add that in. I know it’s not true multitasking but until we get real multitasking, this will do.

About this Flash thing. I haven’t really missed it on the iPhone. Sure, it should be there. I’m not going to deny that. However, I have a feeling most developers will switch to HTML 5 if this thing takes off. That is something I’m willing to take a risk on.

Camera, of course it would be nice. The amount of times I video chat on my macbook pro are like 5 times since OSX came with Video Chat  of owning macs. So while I would love a camera, this will not be a show stopper to me. The ability of apps to go ridiculously wild on the iPad is enough for me to say, man, this thing is definitely worth owning.

Now, why am I getting the 3G one? Well because, the option for an unlocked internet device abroad is incredible. I never really travel but if I do and Micro-sims take off, it will be incredible to have. Plus, it has the GPS chip. I could see that being awesome as a passenger on a road trip. Lastly, $14.99 for data anywhere is incredible. That is not unreasonable at all.

So I’ll be picking up the 3G 32GB iPad.

I also have an iPhone. I do not think the iPad will sell as many units as the iPhone. However, I do think that being able to use the 10″ screen on the internet will make a big difference as opposed to browsing the internet on my 3.5″ iPhone screen. There have been times I tried to do something on iPhone but it was too small to do it. I think the iPad will be perfect for these tasks.

iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 jailbreak released. PwnageTool 3.1.4

October 14, 2009

Ok this is for people who have iPhone 3GS’s. If you do not care about jailbreaking and unlocking your phone, then this isn’t for you either.

1. What is an unlock? An unlock basically allows you to pop in a different SIM card from a GSM carrier (T-Mobile, AT&T in the U.S.A, sorry Verizon).

2. Why is this important? Because, if you go overseas, the rates for data is astronomical. When I went to Amsterdam, AT&T wanted to charge me $20 dollars per MEGABYTE. I used 20 megabytes in less than 3 hours. Under AT&T’s plan that would have cost me $400 bucks.

3. What is a jailbreak? It allows you to install software not supported by Apple. For instance, an unlock program to allow you to use other SIM cards.

I unlocked my original 3G iPhone because I was an idiot and upgraded to 3.1.2 on my 3GS. I bought a vodafone prepaid sim and popped it in. Sent an SMS to a special vodafone code and got unlimited internet for about $15 USD for 30 days. I only needed it for 7 but still. $15 for unlimited as opposed to $400 for 20 megabytes. That’s a difference.

NOTE: YOU CAN NOT UNLOCK YOUR 3GS IF YOU ARE ON 3.1.2 CURRENTLY. However, you WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO UNLOCK EVER if you are NOT JAILBROKEN.

Which brings me to the point of this message… Apple is gearing up to prevent jailbreak’s altogether. They have already patched the bootrom and newer 3GS’s can NOT be jailbroken at all right now. However, if you have an older 3GS and wish to jailbreak, now is the time to do it, or else you may NEVER be able to.

For the super technical: “Note for 3GS users not already jailbroken and stuck at 3.1.x: this version of PwnageTool has a side feature to jailbreak your 3GS.  It uses a simple implementation of the usb control msg hole found by chronicdev, geohot, and our very own gray.  Now that the hole is public and in use, we expect Apple to close it by the next major firmware update. That’s why 3GS users need to get their ECID hashes for 3.1.x now, and need to stay onboard the “jailbreak train” in all future updates.  For more details on what this means, please see our earlier posts or ask in our comments section (moderated by the always helpful @angie and @confucious!).”

So, go do it if this at all sounds like something you might need to do in the future.

Stop and Shop Scan It! – Shopping in the 21st Century

August 8, 2009

Today, I really felt like I was in the 21st century. I walked into my local Stop and Shop at Cross County center, and there I encountered something technologically amazing; The ability to scan and bag as you walk threw the store. It was a completely phenomenal experience, and I recommend everyone to try it.

As soon as you walk in they give you the scanner and the bags. You have to scan your Stop and Shop card, then a scanner activates. You pick it up, and take a bunch of bags from where the scanners are hanging. When you are finished, you go up to the counter, scan this barcode at the register, and then it downloads it onto their main computer. Then you pay like normal.

I did not video tape the end of the experience, but I added a little ending to the video from the store. Watch the video embedded below to see the experience in action.

Launch of Local LTD website

June 16, 2009

Hey all, just put up my first app for review in the iTunes store. It’s not there yet, but I will make a new post once it’s approved. This program is for iPhone 3.0 with In-App E-Mail, and an In-App map. Website for the program is located at

http://www.melman101.com/Local_LTD

Here is the description once approved in the App Store:
Since the dawn of time, there has always been a question in the minds of humans. This question is quite possibly the most epic question pondered throughout the day. That question is “What’s for Lunch?” (or Dinner🙂 ). Local Lunch Time Decider or LTD for short helps you answer that question in today’s wonderful world of technology. Everytime you launch the app, it already has a random choice chosen for you. Then you can have it choose again, find new locations around you, map those locations, call them, e-mail your friends to meet you there, and even add in your own secret locations!

Save these locations in here so you don’t clutter up your address book! Driving down the highway with a friend? Have your friend check out the local eats, and save them in your list! Then you can check them out whenever you get a free chance

Have fun and I hope you do enjoy!

Check it out when you get a chance!
